Coleman was born in Blackpool, Lancashire. She attended Arnold School Blackpool as head girl, and she received every A grade for her A level examinations. She is disappointed that she did not receive a standard schooling when talking about her Emmerdale experience. At the time of her schooling, Coleman was a part of a theater company named In Yer Space with whom she performed at the Edinburgh Festival in the play Crystal Clear. Steven Moffat of Doctor Who revealed in a news meeting held on the 21st March 2012 that Coleman would replace Karen Gillan after she and Arthur Darvill had left.
